7 Ways Blueberries Benefit Your Body

There are a lot of things we love about Summer in Texas.

    BlueBell Ice Cream.

    Baseball.

    BBQ.

    and BLUEBERRIES!

To celebrate national blueberry month, we recently took a trip to The Sanctuary Blueberry Farm to pick some sweet, fresh, organic, local blueberries. We all know they are delicous, but as we will see, blueberries have some incredible health benefits!

7 ways blueberries benefit your body

Here’s a list of seven ways that blueberries benefit your health and a few delicious seasonal treats from Montgomery Bakehouse that include them.

    Blueberries Help the Immune System

Just one cup of blueberries provides 24% of a person’s recommended daily allowance of vitamin C, which improves immune system health!

    Blueberries Help Maintain Healthy Bones

Blueberries contain iron, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and vitamin K. All of these are a component of bone structure. Iron and zinc primarily maintain the strength and elasticity of bones and joints. Lower intakes of Vitamin K are associated with higher risk of bone fracture.

    blueberry muffins

Blueberries Help in Lowering Blood Pressure

Diets low in potassium, calcium, and magnesium are shown to be correlated with high blood pressure. Blueberries contain potassium, calcium, and magnesium, which improves blood pressure levels.

    blueberry squares

Blueberries Help in Reducing Symptoms of Diabetes

People with type 2 diabetes have found that consuming more blueberries and other high fiber foods have improved blood sugar, lipid, and insulin levels. Furthermore, a study found that consuming three servings per week of blueberries or raisins, reduced the risk of type 2 diabetes by 7%.

Blueberries Reduce the Risk of Heart Disease

Fiber content in blueberries reduces the total amount of cholesterol in the blood, which decreases the likelihood of heart disease. The potassium, folate, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and phytonutrient content in blueberries also improves heart health. Vitamin B6 and folate prevent the accumulation of homocysteine in the body, which can damage blood vessels and lead to heart problems.

Blueberries Can Help in Preventing Cancer

Vitamin C, vitamin A, and the phytonutrients found in blueberries are antioxidants that help cells protect against damage from disease-linked cells. Studies have found that antioxidants inhibit tumor growth, decrease inflammation in the body, and significantly decrease the rate at which cancer attacks the cells. Blueberries also contain folate, which aids in DNA synthesis and repair, which prevents the formation of cancer cells due to mutations in DNA.

Blueberries Help with Weight Loss and Decreasing Obesity

Blueberries contain dietary fiber, which is an important factor in weight loss and weight management. High fiber foods increase the feeling of being full and reduce appetite, which reduces a person’s overall caloric intake.

So what do you think?! Eating blueberries is a win-win, right? Delicious AND Nutritious!

  • Get Ready for the Dog Days of Summer

Get Ready for the Dog Days of Summer

    dog treats

Memorial Day is right around the corner, and that means that the dog days of summer will soon be here. While most people associate the dog days with high heat and humidity, here at Montgomery Bakehouse we like to turn our thoughts to our furry friends instead. This summer, treat your dog to a homemade goodie when you come in for cookies and cupcakes for the human crew. We’ve perfected our recipe for pups, and the votes are in: Our dog treats are dog-approved!

Healthy Snacks for Man’s Best Friend

Our dog treats are shaped like — what else? — classic bones and are made with love in our bakery. We make them with simple ingredients that are all real food: Oats, peanut butter, and eggs are all it takes to create your pup’s favorite snack. There’s also a pinch of cinnamon, so they smell great to people and pets alike. Like all special snacks, our dog treats should be doled out in moderation, but you can feel good knowing that you’re giving your best buddy only whole foods and not any additives or preservatives.

    Lacey Loves Them, Too!

Lacey is the Schenk Family’s black lab, and she’ll happily vouch for how delicious these dog treats are. On treat baking days, Tim always pops one into his pocket before heading home. Lacey smells it as soon as Tim opens the truck door, and she knows she’s about to be rewarded! It’s a special family tradition and one that your own pup is sure to enjoy. Pick up a dog treat each time you stop in for pastries or pie, and your puppy’s tail will be wagging in anticipation just like Lacey’s!

The next time you come to Montgomery Bakehouse for a special-order cake or just to grab dessert for the kids after a long day of sports and activities, make sure to ask for a dog treat for man’s best friend, too. Can’t wait to see you!

  • Easter Traditions at Montgomery Bakehouse

    Easter Traditions at Montgomery Bakehouse

    Easter Goodies

Easter is right around the corner, and that means it’s time to don your bunny ears and prepare those Easter baskets for family and friends. Easter is one of our favorite holidays, and we’ve got plenty of sweet treats to brighten your weekend. Whether you’re looking for something cute and cheerful or a traditional baked good that reminds you of your childhood, we have plenty of choices to complete your Easter feast.

    Easter Cakes

A cake shaped like a smiling Easter bunny or chick is always a hit with kids, and you’ll love the way the pretty pastel icing colors brighten your table. Baby animals have always been a welcome sign of new life this season, and we know that young ones love a colorful cake to balance out all the chocolate candy in their Easter baskets. Come check out all our seasonal baked goods — from mini cakes shaped like Easter eggs to specially frosted cookies, we’ve got everything you need!

    Hot Cross Buns

    hot cross buns

Pastel icing isn’t the only Easter tradition we have. We’re proud to make trays of traditional hot cross buns every year. These delicious treats come from England, where it’s said that Queen Elizabeth outlawed them on all but the holiest days. The iced cross reminds us of the story of Good Friday, and we have plenty for you to enjoy this holiday season. Hot cross buns have been a tradition for hundreds of years — if you’ve never tried them before, you should definitely stop by for a taste.

    Challah Bread

    challah bread

Rich, golden brown challah is a leavened bread that we also love to eat this time of year. Challah is a Jewish tradition and is often served during Passover, which is why you’ll find it easily at Easter time. Challah is perfect with coffee for a light Easter breakfast, or you can serve it as a pre-dinner appetizer. We also recommend getting an extra loaf to save — challah makes amazing French toast, too!

Whether you have decades-old Easter traditions to keep or just want to gussy up your brunch, Montgomery Bakehouse has everything you need to feed a crowd for Easter. Order your favorites today to make sure you’re ready for Easter Sunday!

  • March 2 Is National Employee Appreciation Day – Get Ready With Montgomery Bakehouse

March 2 Is National Employee Appreciation Day – Get Ready With Montgomery Bakehouse

Whether you’re a small business owner or the boss of a major enterprise, showing your workers your appreciation of all they do is a big part of maintaining a happy, high-morale workplace. If it’s been a while since you’ve said “thank you” to your staff, we’ve got good news: Friday, March 2 is National Employee Appreciation Day. It’s the perfect time to do something nice to brighten up the break room and show your workers exactly how much you value their contributions.

So how should you celebrate? We think that a little sugar goes a long way towards turning an average workday into a cause for celebration! Here are some of our favorite sweets and treats for making March 2 a great day at the office:

    Sponsor a Breakfast Buffet

There’s nothing like a little morning pick-me-up to help get the day off to a great start. Offer some to-go boxes of coffee along with a good mix of sweet and savory treats to satisfy every palette. Try a platter of sweet breads, kolaches and traditional pastries like Danishes and cinnamon rolls to provide lots of variety. These popular finger foods allow employees to socialize for a bit and then take their goodies back to their desks if they need to.

    Host a Luncheon

If you have time to take a break in the workday to celebrate together, consider hosting a full luncheon for your staff. You could set up a grilling or barbecue station outdoors and allow employees to build their own sandwiches, or you can have an indoor buffet than includes popular local lunch foods. Add a tray of brownies and cookies for dessert, and everyone will be happy!

    Try a Dessert Cart

Most people lose steam in the afternoon, and productivity can take a nosedive between 2 and 3 p.m. This is the perfect time to come around with a dessert trolley stocked with tea, coffee, cakes, and pies. For an extra fun touch, serve your employees yourself as you push the cart around to thank them personally for all their hard work.

  • Sweets for your Sweetheart: Valentine’s Day at Montgomery Bakehouse

Sweets for your Sweetheart: Valentine’s Day at Montgomery Bakehouse

Valentine’s Day and chocolate go hand in hand just like you and your sweetheart! It’s not a surprise that chocolate cookies, candies, and baked goods have always been a part of this special day. After all, it’s a rich, romantic flavor, and since Victorian times young men have used a box of confections to woo their sweethearts.

Even in modern times, chocolate is a delicious way to show someone you care on February 14. Whether you’re hoping to show off your romantic side, show your kids how much you love them, or you just want to brighten up the break room at the office, Montgomery Bakehouse has a whole range of heart-shaped cakes and desserts for you to choose from.

Here are some of our favorite Valentine’s Day treats:

    • Heart-Shaped Cakes and Cookies: There’s no more important symbol of Saint Valentine than a perfect heart, and we’ve got plenty of desserts that can take the place of a paper Valentine. Try our iced, heart-shaped cookies or a collection of heart-shaped petit fours. To feed a crowd, order one of our classic cakes — or even a cheesecake! — in the form of a heart for a festive version of your favorites.
    • Dip It in Chocolate: Everything is better with a little extra chocolate, and it’s the standard flavor of this holiday. Get romantic with decadent chocolate-dipped strawberries, or try an assortment of chocolate-dipped cake balls for a unique twist. Kids will love our chocolate-covered “love bug” mini cakes, too!Valentine's Day Love Bugs
    • Rich, Red Fruit: Not everything about Valentine’s Day needs to be covered in cocoa to be delightful! Bright red fruits are the natural way to inject a little color into your Valentine’s Day. Try heart-shaped Linzer cookies that feature delicious jam or a strawberry pie laced with whipped cream for an on-theme dessert that’s a little different.

When you’re ready to ask someone to be yours, say it with a goodie from Montgomery Bakehouse. The way to anyone’s heart is through their stomach, and we’ve got the food of love right here!

  • Celebrate the Month of FUNuary This Winter at Montgomery Bakehouse

Celebrate the Month of FUNuary This Winter at Montgomery Bakehouse

Now that Christmas is over and the decorations have all been packed away for next year, it’s easy to fall into a wintertime slump. With precious few daylight hours and unpredictable weather that could send you diving for cover at any second, January and February can seem like pretty big bummers after all the holiday festivities.

It doesn’t have to be that way! This month plays host to some of our favorite wintertime events — and we’ve got the goodies you need to celebrate them in style!

    Three Kings’ Day

Epiphany, or Three Kings’ Day, is traditionally celebrated on January 6. We’ve got our famous King Cake all ready to go for the celebration, and we make sure to keep this local favorite available from now through Mardi Gras on February 13. Whether you’re celebrating the Twelfth Day of Christmas, the last day of fun before you give up something for Lent, or you just want to inject some color into a gray winter day, King Cake is just the bright spot you need this time of year. Like winter — believe it or not! — they don’t last forever, so come and get one before they’re gone.

    Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl is an unofficial American holiday, and it’s the perfect excuse to get together with friends for warm food, sweet treats and a whole lot of cheering. No matter who you’re rooting for, we can help make your party a success with football-themed treats for the whole family. Choose a chocolate football cake or cupcakes, or order a big sheet cake decorated with end zones representing the NFC and AFC champs. We can even decorate cookies to look like your favorite players, complete with their jersey numbers and team colors.

There’s definitely fun to be had this winter if you know where to look, so why not plan to make the most of it? When you share the good times with friends and family, you’ll shake the winter blues and feel the warmth of togetherness as you celebrate the season’s special moments.

  • Planning the Perfect Holiday Brunch

    Planning the Perfect Holiday Brunch

    _mg_8685

While it’s a joyful time of year filled with twinkling lights, delicious food, and good cheer, December is also one of the busy months of the year. It takes a lot of planning to make all that fun happen — not to mention addressing Christmas cards, buying gifts, wrapping them up and making sure everything is perfect for the big day.

Hosting a holiday party is a wonderful tradition, but planning it takes a lot of effort. This year, consider skipping the all-out bash and opting for a more casual brunch instead. You’ll have less cooking to do, so your time can be spent connecting with your guests instead of bouncing from kitchen to dining room and back again. You’re also likely to discover that a late morning time slot is open for just about everyone — a great way to make sure everyone can make it to your gathering, even if you’re throwing it together at the last minute.

Intrigued by the idea of a holiday brunch? Try some of these tips to make sure it goes off without a hitch:

    • Make It an Open House: To accommodate everyone’s busy schedules, make your brunch a drop-in affair so more people can stop by. Starting early might help parents make it before family events kick into high gear during the afternoon, while single friends might prefer to come by after twelve.
    • Make It a Buffet: One of the best parts about brunch is that pastries rule the scene. Keep things simple by providing an assortment of sweet and savory finger foods that don’t need to be served hot to be enjoyed. Add fruit and easy-to-serve quiches for variety — and let your guests help themselves!
    • Don’t Forget the Sweets: Montgomery Bakehouse has awesome pastry trays that are perfect for brunch and offer plenty of options in one easy choice. You might also consider a holiday-themed Nativity Cake or a traditional Christmas Stollen — it’s one of our favorites from our German heritage!
    • Set Up a Coffee Bar: Make your brunch memorable by letting your guests play barista with flavored syrups and festive toppings for their morning cup of Joe. Add herbal teas and hot cocoa to round out the selections.
